Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth was photographed wearing a shirt that says “GIRLS INVENTED PUNK, NOT ENGLAND”. Which is a statement about women’s contribution to punk culture yet they don’t share the same spotlight as male led punk bands. And a lot of English male punk bands were very famous. So from what I could tell it was also a way to remind people that punk came from America. Which historically I wouldn’t completely say is accurate. But rock music was predominantly founded in America.
